Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your nanogarden grow?

Harvard engineer Wim Noorduin has a green thumb. Only his thumb is only a few microns wide. By carefully controlling gradients of chemicals, he guided the construction of flower-like crystal structures to match their larger biological forms. It’s certainly art, but it also demonstrates a masterful manipulation of chemistry on the nano scale.

Just how small are they? As NPR reports, these flowers could fit in the lapel of the tiny Abraham Lincoln statue on the back of a penny (back when pennies had the Lincoln Memorial on them, anyway). These electron microscope images are false colored to recreate fantastic flowers, and these manipulations will one day help control the construction of useful microstructures.

If you’re seriously engineering-inclined, here’s the original research as it appears in Science.

Broadcaster hopes to start female sports network

zenonkonopka:

NORTHEAST METRO — When it comes to sports, Kirk Possehl has been around the block a few times. The 50-year-old Shoreview broadcaster has spent decades doing radio coverage of various local sports, from the Mounds View and White Bear school districts to the University of Minnesota. He’s taken listeners through some exciting moments in hockey, softball, track and soccer, but for Possehl, there’s one sports experience that tops all the rest: the sight of a girl or young woman playing her sport just for the joy of it.

I was just notified of this, and I’m really excited that this is centered towards women in sports. It will be an online broadcast focusing on encouraging female athletes and giving them role models through showing stories of female athletes.

For more information on Play for Her, call Possehl at 612-747-2726. Donations can be sent to Kaptainskorner Productions, c/o North Star Bank, 4661 Hwy 61 in White Bear Lake, attention Lisa Meyers.
